Description:
This eerie sounding music attempts to capture pre-Christian era mythological beliefs of life after death. In those times, two coins were placed upon the eyes of the dearly departed. The coins were meant to be used for paying the soul’s passage across the River Styx. Charon, the boatman, accepted the coins for his labor in getting the souls to the other side. Rich dissonant chords from the choir accompany the Charon’s song as he makes his way across the icy-dark waters of the River Styx.
The music is divided into four sections: The piece open with a bassoon solo happily playing a tune. Shortly, the solo begins to break up as death approaches. A measure of silence indicates the passage from life to death. The second section is entitled “The March to Styx.” The third section features a Basso Profundo solo resurrecting Charon into life. In the fourth section the bassoon solo begins anew….as if death had no effect upon the soul’s ability to endure into eternity.
The orchestral score is dedicated to one of our mentors, poet Dan Jaffe. Dan has published many books of poetry.
The Vocal Score is dedicated to Dr. Gustavo Halley. Dr. Halley was our voice teacher at the Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Halley is, himself, a bass and has performed many professional opera roles throughout his artistic career. Dr. Halley has retired and holds Professor Emeritus status at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
